Whalefall
Whalefall is a genre-bending band combining influences from shoegaze, hardcore, and Midwest emo. With a debut album releasing in May, the BARE grant has helped them pay for recording and promotion. They are excited to go on a West Coast tour in August from Seattle to San Diego, as well as begin their second album.

Sam Quinones
Sam, a 21-year-old Libra, has been playing music for as long as they can remember, growing up training in classical piano and picking up guitar around the age of 14. Over the past few years, they started writing their own music, describing it as “truly liberating.”
With the BARE Artist Fund grant, they were able to record their entire EP with their producer Alex Purcell. Having put their heart and soul into this EP, Sam is thankful to everyone who supported them along the way.

Emily Peng
Emily’s biggest passion is creative writing; she is a published poet and working writer for several publications. She shares her poetry through her writing blog and the sporadic literary magazine. Emily gave a TEDxTalk on the intersections between mental health and literature; she has also worked as a behavioral therapist, aiming to improve communication skills with children on the spectrum.
She aims to connect her passion for writing with her work in community service and speech.Her goal is to publish a collection with her grant from BARE.

What is Artist Fund?
The Artist Fund serves as Bare Magazine’s platform for showcasing and honoring the artistic talent of UC Berkeley students. Our goal is to encourage artistic expression by increasing exposure and providing financial support for student projects.
What is Artist Showcase?
Artists of various mediums and backgrounds come together each semester to celebrate their skills in a showcase. We showcase their art in a gallery-like setting, and give cash prizes ranging from $100-$300.
Who Can Apply?
Berkeley student applicants range from painters to musicians, sculptors to poets. Applications open every semester, and we highly encourage all artists to submit their work.
